PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
By Ann Devlin
At long last, Spring is finally upon us! I know that we’re all happy to see the snow and ice behind us (we hope) and to start thinking about our gardens and outdoor activities during the upcoming warmer weather.
It is hard to believe that, before we know it, we’ll be approaching the end of another year (the SAVE year runs from July 1 through June 30). But there are still several interesting upcoming events:
-
SAVE will hold another of its popular Swaps - “It’s New To You” - on Saturday, April 16, from 10 AM to 2 PM at Breakheart Reservation in the Visitors Center parking area. The Swap will be held in conjunction with Park Serve Day sponsored by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). We hope you’ll stop by and either bring one or more still usable item(s) or take an item(s), or both. Previous swaps have been very successful and it’s always gratifying to know that these items will remain out of the waste stream and make all of us think differently about what we regard as “trash”. Remember that this is a free swap – with no money exchanged – and you are not required to bring an item in order to take an item.
-
SAVE is planning to hold its Annual Meeting and Dinner in mid-June. We have tentatively set aside Wednesday, June 15, with a back-up date of Wednesday, June 22. Please hold these dates while plans are finalized. We will let you know the exact date and location as soon as possible.
-
SAVE volunteers will celebrate Earth Day this year by helping out at the Saugus Tree Farm on Saturday, April 30, from 9 AM to 3 PM. The Tree Committee is planning to celebrate Arbor Day by holding a Tree Farm Maintenance Day on the same date. What better way to celebrate our environmental stewardship than to join SAVE and the Saugus Tree Committee at the Tree Farm for whatever period of time you can spare on that day?
We hope to see you at one or more of these exciting events.
SAVE’S NEXT “IT’S NEW TO YOU” SWAP
Breakheart Reservation
Saturday, April 16
10:00 am to 2:00 pm
SAVE, DCR and the FRIENDS OF BREAKHEART have joined together to present another “SWAP” event – It’s New To You – to keep still-usable items out of the waste stream.
The event, to be held at Breakheart’s Christopher P. Dunne Visitors Center in conjunction with DCR’s Park Serve Day, is scheduled for Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and is open to one and all.
Everyone is invited to bring one or more no longer wanted but still-usable items to swap or just browse the table to pick up something you can use – all FREE – to keep still-usable items out of the waste stream. We ask that items be dropped off by noon to offer the largest selection of items to the greatest number of people. (Please do not bring any items/products to the SWAP that require special disposal.) Remember, it is not mandatory to take an item if you bring something to donate to the SWAP, nor is it mandatory to bring an item in order to take an item.
For questions or more information, please contact SAVE President Ann Devlin by e-mail at adevlin@aisle10.net or by telephone 781-233-5717.
Also check our website at www.SaugusSAVE.org
Remember that you can bring items or take items, you do not have to do both!
PLEASE REMEMBER TO: REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
ATTENTION MEMBERS:
PLEASE CALL YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVES NOW
TO SUPPORT THE UPDATED BOTTLE BILL
Members, please consider taking the time to contact your state representatives immediately
to encourage support for the updated bottle bill, House 3515. You can contact State Representative Donald Wong at 617-722-2000 – it’s important to make those calls now!
When the Bottle Bill became law in 1983, most soft drinks on the shelves were some kind of soda -- cola and the like. So many of the soft drinks we now consume -- iced tea, water, and sports drinks -- are not covered by the Bottle Bill's nickel deposit system, and those containers are ending up in the trash. The updated Bottle Bill would add all these "new age" drinks to the law.
The bottle bill is still the most successful recycling program in the state, with close to 70% of containers redeemed for recycling. So please make the effort to contact your State Representative to encourage his/her support so that we can all continue to contribute to a healthier environment, cleaner and safer communities, and a stronger economy.
SAVE NEWSLETTER AVAILABLE VIA E-MAIL
SAVE is encouraging its members to opt to receive SAVE Newsletters by e-mail. Today,
with increased technology, it is likely that many more members have access to e-mail and would like to take advantage of the convenience of receiving the SAVE Newsletter via e-mail.
Some of the benefits of distributing the newsletter by e-mail are: reducing our collective carbon footprint by saving more trees because less paper will be used; saving electricity because less copying will need to be done; saving postage costs; and, members will receive
their newsletter several days earlier.
A significant number of members are already receiving their newsletters by e-mail, and we urge all of you to let us know if you are interested in receiving your SAVE Newsletter by e-mail.
Please contact Ann Devlin at adevlin@aisle10.net or at 781-233-5717 to provide your name and e-mail address. We appreciate your cooperation.
The SAVE Newsletter can also be viewed, downloaded, saved,
and printed at our website - www.SaugusSAVE.org

(SAVE’s 2012 Fiscal Year runs from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012)
Again, many thanks to all those members who have submitted their dues to date or who have joined as new members – and to those who so generously included additional monies earmarked for either the SAVE Scholarship/Educational Fund or the Environmental Fund.

While SAVE annual dues have remained extremely low, your financial contributions are an important source of income that help support our ongoing efforts to promote a better quality of life in Saugus through environmental concern and action. These funds also make it possible for us to publish our newsletter, hold local Environmental Candidates’ Nights, and grant an annual college scholarship to a local high school graduate or sponsor an environmental educational event.
Your continued support is most appreciated. Please direct questions regarding
SAVE membership to Ann Devlin at adevlin@aisle10.net or at 781-233-5717
THE SAUGUS TREE COMMITTEE, IN OBSERVANCE OF ARBOR DAY APRIL 29TH, WILL SPONSOR A TREE FARM MAINTENANCE DAY
SATURDAY, APRIL 30, 2011
9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Come join us for an hour – or help all day! The trees need you.
On Saturday, April 30th, the Saugus Tree Committee is holding its Spring tree maintenance and tree planting at the Saugus Tree Farm located off Jasper Street in Saugus Center (see directions below). Everyone who is willing to get their hands dirty is invited to join the Tree Committee and SAVE volunteers for the exercise and fun we enjoy while constructively ensuring the growth and development of our homegrown trees. In addition, this is a great
project for students who are looking to complete some worthwhile community service to satisfy your graduation requirement.
Light refreshments and drinks will be provided.
Come join us “down on the farm” for a few hours of fresh air and community participation. Volunteers are encouraged to wear work clothes, and bring some work gloves, a hat, boots
(as it may be muddy), and sunscreen/bug spray. If you have trowels, shovels, or hoes,
please bring them along.
With a little tender loving care, the trees the Committee is growing to plant around Town
will make a difference in the air we breathe and in the beautification of Saugus.
Further information will gladly be given if you call Tim Hawkes at 781-233-6428 or Margery Hunter at 781-233-0349 or Nancy Prag at 781-231-9531.
Directions to the Saugus Tree Farm: Central Street to Jasper Street. Take a right on Cross Street (the sign says “to Auburn Street”). Bear left onto Auburn Street. The walk-though driveway is between 25 and 27 Auburn Street (which is the Town right-of-way) to the Tree Farm. You may park near 27 Auburn Street (Pioneer Sales Building), then walk down the driveway to the right of the building, over the railroad tracks and follow the dirt road to the Tree Farm. You can also try to drive all the way down, but space is limited.
